A very interesting character (especially as regards love, sex, the comparison with Cole Porter, etc.).<\/li>\n<li>A really interesting <a href=\"http:\/\/longform.org\/stories\/pitch-battles\">article<\/a> by Colin Dickey in the Believer about controversies over how to set pitch. Who&#8217;d have thought that you&#8217;d ever read about Placido Domingo and LaRouche in the same article?<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>An <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2013\/03\/26\/us\/anthony-lewis-pulitzer-prize-winning-columnist-dies-at-85.html\">obituary<\/a> of Anthony Lewis, whose book <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0679723129\/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=0679723129&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=rafkin-20\">Gideon&#8217;s Trumpet<\/a>\u00a0I remember enjoying a long time ago. An amusing quote is hidden in the article.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Mr. Lewis\u2019s coverage of the court impressed Justice Felix Frankfurter, who called Mr. Reston. \u201cI can\u2019t believe what this young man achieved,\u201d Justice Frankfurter said, as Mr. Reston recalled in his memoir, \u201cDeadline.\u201d \u201cThere are not two justices of this court who have such a grasp of these cases.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>This recalls a quote of Lionel Abel, recalled by Dick Schaap, from Abel&#8217;s NYT <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2001\/04\/25\/arts\/lionel-abel-90-playwright-and-essayist.html\">obituary<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Sartre says Abel is the most intelligent man in New York City. Kenneth Rexroth, the poet-critic, says Abel is the most intelligent man in New York City. Abel himself will not say that he is the most intelligent man in New York City. But he will say that Sartre and Rexroth are both magnificent judges of intellect.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/li>\n<li>An interesting <a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/2013\/02\/21\/172495667\/resuscitation-experiences-and-erasing-death\">interview<\/a> on NPR&#8217;s Fresh Air about near-death (or after-death, as it&#8217;s called) experiences, with Dr. Sam Parnia. About 10-20% of patients who are resuscitated after heart failure report memories of white lights, can recall conversations that occurred in the hospital, etc.; interestingly (if I heard correctly), in certain cases this happens\u00a0<em>in spite of the fact<\/em>\u00a0that their brains showed no activity.<\/li>\n<li>This blew my mind: the anecdote about Hemingway&#8217;s famous six-word story (&#8220;For sale: baby shoes, never worn&#8221; ) is probably\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.slate.com\/blogs\/browbeat\/2013\/01\/31\/for_sale_baby_shoes_never_worn_hemingway_probably_did_not_write_the_famous.html\">apocryphal<\/a>. It&#8217;s not surprising when certain things&#8212;a quote attributed to Churchill, say&#8212;are apocryphal. But this seems like the sort of thing that would have been debunked.\u00a0(So does this mean everything creative writing professors say is false? Can I tell things without showing?) \u00a0Along these lines, a segment from the Freakonomics podcast,<sup id=\"fnref-231:3\"><a href=\"#fn-231:3\" rel=\"footnote\" onclick=\"javascript:_paq.push(['setCustomUrl','#fn-231:3']);javascript:_paq.push(['trackPageView', 'Footnote: #fn-231:3']) ;\">3<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.wnyc.org\/shows\/freakonomics-radio\/2012\/dec\/12\/\">The Legacy of a Jerk<\/a>\u00a0[<a href=\"http:\/\/www.freakonomics.com\/2012\/07\/19\/legacy-of-a-jerk-full-transcript\/\">full transcript<\/a>], noted that Ty Cobb, in fact, wasn&#8217;t necessarily such a bad guy&#8212;and maybe Roberto Clemente wasn&#8217;t the saint he was turned into. Again, you&#8217;d think this information-filled internet age would change these things. (And perhaps it has; after all, I learned about Ty Cobb and Roberto Clemente from, yes, a book, circa 1995. Surely the nascent baseball fan nowadays learns things from the internet.)<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>A 1991\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/longform.org\/stories\/playboy-interview-gene-siskel-and-roger-ebert\">interview<\/a>\u00a0of Siskel and Ebert in Playboy. An interesting tidbit:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><strong>Playboy:<\/strong>\u00a0So besides yourselves, who has the biggest ego in the business?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Siskel:<\/strong>\u00a0I\u2019m sure it\u2019s a sixty-way tie.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ebert:\u00a0<\/strong>When you say, \u201cWho has the biggest ego,\u201d there\u2019s an implicit criticism. You\u2019re actually asking who\u2019s the biggest asshole. I would say that the biggest ego of anyone I\u2019ve spoken to in the movies belongs to Ingmar Bergman, but I would want that to be heard as praise. He has a very highly developed sense of self, of who he is, what he thinks and what he cares about. He\u2019s one of the most impressive people I\u2019ve ever met. Woody Allen has an extremely well-developed and healthy ego. That does not mean he\u2019s conceited; it doesn\u2019t mean he\u2019s insufferable. It just means that he takes himself seriously, and he should.<\/p>\n<p>In terms of dynamic energy and infectious enthusiasm, very few people are the match of Martin Scorsese. I gave him his first print review. It was his first film, Who\u2019s That Knocking at My Door? I said, \u201cIn ten years, he\u2019ll be the American Fellini.\u201d Well, of course, that was wrong, because there\u2019s nothing similar between Scorsese and Fellini. But he called me up and said, \u201cGeez, do you think it\u2019s gonna take that long?\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/li>\n<li>A good article from Gawker:\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/gawker.com\/5972454\">Journalism is not narcissism<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2013\/03\/31\/magazine\/is-giving-the-secret-to-getting-ahead.html?&amp;pagewanted=all\">Is Giving the Secret to Getting Ahead?<\/a>\u00a0An interesting article in the NYT.\u00a0Economic theory says a lot about how self-interested actors ought to behave. This is only a crude approximation of reality, but it&#8217;s particularly problematic when one considers what happens <em>within<\/em>, say, a corporation. This is both because (a) even if employees are self-interested, there&#8217;s a challenge of aligning their interests with that of their employer and (b) of course people aren&#8217;t purely self-interested, at least not in the simplest sense for economic models (assuming they just want to maximize success and money).\u00a0(Within academia&#8212;which is an interesting test case, since there are many of the same corporate issues, like challenges in aligning interests, managing finite resources, motivating employees, even though the ultimate goal is different than profit maximization&#8212;this comes up, too.) \u00a0So there are really two different issues here. One is more economic, thinking about how to align incentives well, so that employees will work hard, so that the desire for promotion doesn&#8217;t lead to interoffice politics where favoritism beats meritocracy, so that (appropriate) whistle-blowing is rewarded.\u00a0But another is psychological. How do we acknowledge the reality that humans care about many other things than money and promotions? \u00a0I think culture&#8212;which is such a complicated beast&#8212;plays a big role in this.\u00a0How, though, to effect cultural changes in a way that&#8217;s not artificial? \u00a0When I see the HR emails I get from University of Michigan, with their various ploys and awards, or when I go to a medical complex and read banal &#8220;Mission Statements&#8221;, I can&#8217;t help but think that these only create a more deadened, Orwellian world. Yet you can certainly tell the difference when you&#8217;re in institutions where there <em>is<\/em>\u00a0a great culture, and it redounds to the benefit of all.\u00a0I imagine Adam Grant&#8217;s research can shed some light here.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"footnotes\">\n<hr \/>\n<ol>\n<li id=\"fn-231:1\">\n<p>The article is by law professor <a href=\"http:\/\/victorfleischer.com\/\">Victor Fleischer<\/a>, who often writes good stuff about taxation. Taxation, stereotypes of boredom notwithstanding, is a fascinating topic; after all, if the world is all about different actor&#8217;s incentives, then taxation is a primary lever the government can use to effect change.&#160;<a href=\"#fnref-231:1\" rev=\"footnote\" onclick=\"javascript:_paq.push(['setCustomUrl','#fnref-231:1']);javascript:_paq.push(['trackPageView', 'From Footnote: #fnref-231:1']) ;\">&#8617;<\/a><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li id=\"fn-231:2\">\n<p>Apropos of Gottlieb, a good Paris Review <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/interviews\/1760\/the-art-of-editing-no-1-robert-gottlieb\">interview<\/a> with him.
