Too soon?<\/a> Often Weingarten is a bit (or, well, more than a bit) much, but this isn&#8217;t bad.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>A good <a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/2013\/06\/13\/191279136\/israeli-writer-yoram-kaniuk-83-on-pain-and-peace\">interview<\/a> on <em>Fresh Air<\/em> of Israel writer Yoram Kaniuk, who died recently. An important advocate for peace and decency.<sup id=\"fnref-727-quote\"><a href=\"#fn-727-quote\" rel=\"footnote\">1<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Should <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2013\/06\/14\/nyregion\/lawsuit-aims-to-strip-happy-birthday-to-you-of-its-copyright.html\">Happy Birthday to You<\/a> be in the public domain? A new lawsuit.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>An <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nature.com\/news\/science-prizes-the-new-nobels-1.13168\">article<\/a> on the proliferation of new Nobel-style academic prizes.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.newrepublic.com\/article\/113294\/how-corporations-hijacked-first-amendment-evade-regulation\">How Corporations Hijacked the First Amendment to Evade Regulation<\/a>. A good article by Tim Wu in the <em>New Republic.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>A <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/culture\/news\/ethan-nadelmann-the-real-drug-czar-20130606?print=true\">profile<\/a> of Ethan Nadelmann, one of the leaders of the fight for drug legalization.<sup id=\"fnref-727-tenure\"><a href=\"#fn-727-tenure\" rel=\"footnote\">2<\/a><\/sup> Obviously, decriminalization of marijuana is important for so many reasons: the fight against marijuana has wasted our society&#8217;s resources, created many new sources of crime, deprived sick people with a drug that seems to help, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2013\/06\/16\/opinion\/sunday\/racially-biased-arrests-for-pot.html?_r=0\">disproportionately targeted<\/a> minority communities.  That said, I fear the progress towards decriminalization won&#8217;t be done in the right way. First, it&#8217;s important to protect <a href=\"http:\/\/plato.stanford.edu\/entries\/liberty-positive-negative\/\">negative liberties<\/a>; for example, I shouldn&#8217;t have to smell marijuana smoke in my apartment building. Second, it&#8217;s important to figure out some way of dissuading those at risk from trying marijuana, which though harmless for some can <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/roomfordebate\/2013\/05\/22\/how-can-marijuana-be-sold-safely\/marijuana-is-a-risky-habit-we-shouldnt-encourage\">aggravate<\/a> psychosis in others.  (This is not to say that alcohol doesn&#8217;t have serious problems as well, of course.) It&#8217;s interesting to see how economics always prevails; entrenched medical marijuana now is sometimes <a href=\"http:\/\/reason.com\/blog\/2012\/04\/16\/why-medical-marijuana-providers-are-oppo\">opposing<\/a> broader legalization.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"footnotes\">\n<hr \/>\n<ol>\n<li id=\"fn-727-quote\">\n<p>An interesting quote from this: &#8220;A Palestinian writer once accused the Palestinians and said to them, look, these Jews, I mean first of all they kill you. Then they moralize about it. Then they write the best poems about it.&#8221;&#160;<a href=\"#fnref-727-quote\" rev=\"footnote\">&#8617;<\/a>\n<\/li>\n<li id=\"fn-727-tenure\">\nOne quibble with the article. It notes that Nadelmann left a professorship at Princeton in 1994. It doesn&#8217;t specify at all why he left.  In particular, had he been denied tenure?  An article in the Princeton <a href=\"http:\/\/libserv23.princeton.edu\/princetonperiodicals\/cgi-bin\/princetonperiodicals?a=d&amp;d=WeeklyBulletin19940207-01.2.9&amp;e=-------en-20--1--txt-IN-----\">weekly bulletin<\/a> says he resigns as an assistant professor. In a 1990 <em>Daily Princetonian<\/em> <a href=\"http:\/\/theprince.princeton.edu\/princetonperiodicals\/cgi-bin\/princetonperiodicals?a=d&amp;d=Princetonian19900110-01.2.7&amp;srpos=4&amp;e=------199-en-20--1-byDA-txt-IN-wilson----\">article<\/a>, he acknowledged the risks of his focus on advocacy:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\n  Nadelman realizes his national reputation does not guarantee that he will receive tenure when his case comes up in 1992.<\/p>\n<p>  &#8220;I think it helps in [the] eyes of some and hurts in the eyes of others,&#8221; Nadelmann says. &#8220;I think people respect the journals I&#8217;ve published in (including Science and Foreign Policy).&#8221;\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It seems likely, then, that he was denied tenure, and this led to his departure. (Correct me if I&#8217;m wrong!) This <em>Daily Beast<\/em> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thedailybeast.com\/newsweek\/2009\/10\/14\/prohibition-fighter.html\">article<\/a> is therefore probably incorrect in saying, &#8220;Had he stuck with Princeton, he&#8217;d likely be tenured, with an easy courseload and heaps of time to write books.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>There is of course absolutely no shame in not receiving tenure&#8212;Nadelmann has probably done much more good than many who stay within the ivory tower&#8212;and I feel a bit of guilt in the gossipy nature of my question about it. But surely, in a case like this, a reporter has an obligation to understand and explain his departure from academia.
